Rising waters from overnight downpours kept local emergency officials and the Department of Transportation (DOT) busy throughout early morning hours Wednesday. See more below:

Excessive rain poured over Worth County within the past few days and though the water was much needed from an agricultural standpoint, it posed threat for many local homes.

By 2 A.M. this morning, the Sylvester Police and Fire Departments along with Worth County Fire/Rescue and Sheriff’s deputies had advised many residents of the threat of overnight flooding at their home. Many evacuated their homes relocating primarily with relatives and at least four families were housed under assistance provided by Red Cross. SFD Chief Chris Duncan said his department went to a total of 19 homes in Sylvester to evacuate. SFD placed sandbags at a few locations including the Mary Alice Shipp Center. Water levels threatened several structures but no home damage has been reported in the city of Sylvester thus far. Poulan and Sumner also each had one home evacuated.

Over 20 road closures in Worth County were reported to the E-911 dispatch center by sunrise. School bus drivers made every effort to reroute for pick-ups encountering washed out roadways and downed trees. WCFR Captain Ray Salter reported, as he was still surveying damage countywide at 1 P.M., a total of nearly 49 roadways flooded overnight; several are currently holding water over the roadway including Sheep Hole Hill and Brown Cemetery Roads. Willow and Burch Road residents were evacuated with several homes in that area receiving flood damage.

Several roadways cleared as daylight hours gave way to clearing skies and a bit of sunshine. The moment may be short lived however as the National Weather Service predicts a 50 percent chance of rains after 3 P.M. Wednesday. NWS reports sunshine should return Thursday with a high near 63.
