Dorothy Louise Elizabeth Branch Jeter

Mrs. Dorothy Louise Elizabeth Branch Jeter, 84, passed away at her home in Sylvester on June 23, 2010.  Funeral Home visitation was held from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Sunday, June 27 at Banks Funeral Home in Sylvester. Services were held the following Monday at 10:00 AM in the Red Oak Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Hobby and the Rev. Dexter Wilson officiating.  Mrs. Jeter was laid to rest in the family plot at Red Oak Baptist Church Cemetery in Doles, Georgia.Born at home in rural Early County, Georgia, on November 5, 1925, Dot, as she was affectionately called by most who knew her, was the second child born to Carlos Clide and Edna Thompson Branch.  She and her six siblings enjoyed a childhood of barefoot freedom and camaraderie surrounded by her mother’s large extended family.  Carlos and Edna were “salt of the earth” working people who insisted their children attend church, behave properly, and account well of themselves in all endeavors.  Dot accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized when she was ten.  She took the deep roots of Christ’s love with her when her family moved to eastern Dougherty County in the late 30’s.  Dorothy’s father purchased a farm on what is now Branch Road between the Albany by-pass and Highway 82 East.  Like most families during the Great Depression, the Branch kids were poor, but their Mama and Daddy made sure that necessities were provided and life’s lessons were taught. In 1942, Dot graduated from Albany High School where she had enjoyed quite a career as a basketball player.  For many years in the 1990’s, Mrs. Jeter joined her high school classmates once a week for a lunchtime filled with the laughter of old memories and the joy of showing off grandchildren. Dubbed the “Thursday Lunch Bunch,” this group of AHS graduates met weekly into the early years of the 21stcentury.Dorothy met Worth County native Harold Jeter in early 1946.  Family legend has it that the youthful sailor twisted Dot’s words when she told him she was twenty years old.  His reply was that he was twenty too, giving her the impression that he was twenty-two years old.  His side of the story was that he was so smitten he didn’t want to admit that he was just nineteen.  Dot and Harold married on Feb. 26, 1946, and Harold took Dot home to meet his parents and to live with them until he was released from the U. S. Navy.  Dot enjoyed a loving and caring relationship with her in-laws, William Murray and Willie Mae Jeter, throughout the rest of their lives, and in their later years played an important role as caregiver as their health declined. Dorothy began her career as a bank teller in 1952 with the National Bank of Albany, moving to the Citizens and Southern National Bank in 1955; she retired in 1985 with 30 years of service.  The job as a bank teller was an exceptional fit for Dot Jeter as she was a “people person” who fondly adored her many regular customers at the Slappey Drive branch and later at the East Oglethorpe branch of C & S Bank.  She greatly valued her years working with the public, and was always thrilled after her retirement to “run into” a former customer.Dot Jeter was an active and energetic mother.  She loved the beach and being outdoors; summer weekends and vacations were spent camping with her four children and their friends at St. Andrews State Park in Panama City Beach, Florida. She played ball with her children, helped them build seashell collections, and was the driving force of family fun and laughter, travel and exploration. She was also an excellent cook.     By the time of her retirement, Dot and Harold had returned to the Jeter farm in rural Worth County, living in the same house they had built as newlyweds. “Jeter’s Crossroads” became a colorful oasis of Dot’s daylilies, as she found great satisfaction in tending to and sharing bunches of day lilies with family and friends.  At this time she also relished her role as “Grandma Dottie” to her two oldest grandchildren, Will Jeter and Kimberly Chase.  She was eventually blessed with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; she considered each one a special gift from the good Lord.Retirement years found Dot camping again; she and Harold enjoyed “RVing” cross country to spend summers in the mountains of Arizona.  This was a special time for Dot, as she and Harold spent an extended time at Happy Jack campsite in the mountains above Phoenix, Arizona with their daughter Carol and her family during Carol’s illness.  In 2008, Dot and Harold made the decision to “move to town” after thirty years at Jeter’s Crossing and they relocated to their North Isabella Street home in Sylvester.  Mrs. Jeter was quite a character, especially in the latter years of her life when she spoke her mind in an especially forthright manner.  She was a lively Southern Steele Magnolia who fulfilled the expectations of her parents to “account well of herself.”  She will be greatly missed by those who loved her dearly. Mrs. Jeter was a former member of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, and a former member of Red Oak Baptist Church in Doles where she served as the secretary of the cemetery committee for over 20 years.  Dot was a member of First Baptist Church of Sylvester at the time of her death. Mrs. Jeter is survived by her children, Phyllis Jeter of Sylvester, Jerry Jeter and his wife Sharon of Jeter’s Crossing, and Sue Youngblood and her husband Tommy of Sylvester; her grandchildren, Kimberly Soza and her husband Gilbert of Mesa, Arizona; Will Jeter of Phoenix, Arizona; Eli McCrory of Prattville, Alabama, and Jay Gordon McCrory of Auburn, Alabama; Taylor Youngblood of Sylvester, Logan Youngblood of Statesboro, Georgia, and Sam Youngblood of Sylvester; her great grandchildren, Kerstin  Trevolt and Riley Soza of Mesa, Arizona, and Brooklyn Youngblood of Sylvester; a son-in-law, Ronn Chase of Payson, Arizona; her sister, Margaret Ann Beckham and her husband Bill of Havana, Florida; and her brothers, Carlos Branch, Jr. and his wife Carolyn of Navarre, Florida;  Robert Branch and his wife Shirley of Weatherford, Texas; Tommy Branch and his wife  Margaret  of Albany, Georgia; and Billy Branch and his wife Patsy of Comanche County, Texas, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Mrs. Jeter was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-four years, Harold Jeter, on June 3, 2010; daughter, Carol Jeter Chase (2002), sisters, Edna Pearl McFadden and Hazel Brewer, and her parents.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Mrs. Jeter’s favorite charity, the Baptist Children’s Home,   9420 Blackshear Hwy, Baxley, GA 31513 or the Red Oak Baptist Church Cemetery, C/O Pearl Marie Calhoun, 560 Calhoun Road, Sylvester, GA 31791. The son of William Murray and Willie Mae Bridges Jeter, Harold Jeter was born January 22, 1927 in Worth County at what is popularly known as “Jeter’s Crossing,” the intersection of  Georgia Highways 32 and 33 near Doles. He received his education in the Worth County school system and graduated from Warwick High School in 1943. Soon thereafter he joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II as a mechanic on an American warship at duty in the waters around the Philippine Islands. He and his shipmates spent over six months ashore on the Islands maintaining and protecting an air strip for American bombers.

Harold Jeter returned from the war in 1945, and met and married Dorothy Branch of Albany on February 22, 1946 after a whirlwind romance of two weeks. He owned and operated his own gasoline trucking company for several years in Worth County before moving to Albany and joining the Albany Police Department.  He served in all areas of law enforcement, including the motorcycle division, the uniformed division, and the detective division as he made his way up the ranks of the APD. Officer Jeter graduated from the Southern Police Institute of Louisville, Kentucky with a degree in investigative analysis in 1963 and was transferred to the detective division of the APD upon his return from Kentucky. He served during the era of the Albany Civil Rights Movement, often as a part of the plain clothes police unit assigned to provide security for the Rev. Martin Luther King during his many visits to Albany. Mr. Jeter retired from the Albany Police Department as a major in the detective division in 1975, returning to the four corners of Jeter’s Crossing to engage in farming with his father.  He retired again, this time from farming, after 20 years of growing peanuts and corn, and building and operating an at-the-time modern hog producing business.  He and Dorothy “moved to town” in 2008, relocating to their Isabella Street home. Mr. Jeter was a quiet man who rarely talked about his war experiences or the grimy side of his job as a police officer.  He was a conservator of the land, finding great pleasure in rebuilding and maintaining the soil to allow it to produce at its greatest level. He enjoyed playing cards, loved to smoke a pipe, and avidly followed the Atlanta Braves for many years.  He will be greatly missed by those who loved him dearly.
