Homerun Twins and Another Worth Win

Tuesday night softball in Worth County brought the Tift County Lady Blue Devils to face Worth County for the third time this season and each meeting has resulted in a big win for the Lady Rams.

After three Tift batters and three quick outs at the top of the 1st inning tonight, Kimberly Lee opened up the game for the Lady Rams and on her first swing connected for a triple. Morgan Bell walked to first and Haley Ellis gets a single sending Lee in for the first run of the game. The stage was set for the Lady Rams to follow up withthree RBI’s and to enter 2nd inning at 4- 0.

Haley Elllis takes her turn up to bat and homers right field. Her twin sister, Heather Elllis, follows immediately with a left field homer. The 2nd inning ends with Rams leading at 6 – 0. As the Lady Rams are at bat in the 3rd, Lee singles and quickly steals to second. Morgan Bell gets a hit and is out at first, but opens opportunity for Lee to break and make it to third. On a Tift passed ball, Lee makes it in for another Worth run.

Fourth inning would not prove promising for the Lady Blue Devils as Lady Rams held them scoreless with a repeat of 1st inning – Three batters and three quick outs. Heather Ellis stole to 2nd after earning a single. Two fielding errors by the Devils would give Ellis enough leeway to score another run with junior Lauren Potts trailing behind her for a run and Katlyn Parton stopped on third awaiting her chance to score. It came when Molly Maxwell got a hit and reached base off an overthrown out attempt to 1st by Tift.

Lady Rams held at 10- 0 for the final when the Blue Devils were detained yet again at three batters and three outs, top of the 5th. Kelly Weaver pitched for Worth County tonight and for another Rams near no-hitter. Tifton earned only one hit good for a single in the 2nd.

This is the Lady Rams’ ninth consecutive win with the last three being shut-outs. They play again at home Thursday against region opponents Monroe Tornadoes. See OnScene game photos below:

Each year when seasonal flu returns, it is often accompanied by another hazard – anti-vaccine myths that are not backed up by facts, say Public Health experts. “The vaccines approved by FDA to protect against influenza have a long and successful track record of safety and effectiveness in the United States,” said Southwest Health District Immunization Coordinator Sue Dale. “Seasonal influenza vaccination is the most important way of preventing seasonal flu and potentially severe complications, including death. Seasonal influenza vaccination reduces the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza or transmitting influenza to others,” she said.

While no vaccine is 100% effective against preventing disease, vaccination is the best protection against influenza and can prevent many illnesses and deaths, Dale said. Yet at the same time county health departments gear up for their annual flu shot campaigns, myths and misconceptions about the safety of seasonal influenza vaccine typically start to circulate, said Southwest Health District Health Director Dr. Jacqueline Grant.
“A common misconception concerns thimerosal, a preservative derived from mercury used in multi-dose packs of vaccine,” Grant said. “People can request thimerosal-free vaccine, even though the amount of thimerosal used to prevent the batches of vaccine from going bad is too tiny to cause cancer.”

Another myth – that vaccines cause autism – has been popularized by Andrew Wakefield, a British physician whose work was discredited and who has been banned from working in medicine in his country. “Autism is a neurological disorder that public health takes seriously,” Grant said. “However research shows no link between autism and vaccines. What research does show is that vaccine protects us from vaccine-preventable diseases that can cause illnesses and, in some cases, death.”

The reason people should get vaccinated against influenza each year is because flu viruses are unpredictable and mutate frequently. So each year, scientists analyze data to determine the three viruses most likely to cause illness in the season ahead and formulate a vaccine to protect against them. This year’s flu formula protects against the Pandemic 2009 H1N1 virus (the seasonal vaccine always contains an H1N1 strain); an A-H3N2 strain; and a B-Brisbane strain, Dale said. Flu shots can’t cause flu because they don’t contain live viruses, Dale added. FluMist® does contain weakened live viruses, but getting flu from FluMist® is extremely rare because screenings are performed to ensure it is given to healthy individuals between 2 and 49 years old. However, people concerned about getting the live virus vaccine can choose injectable vaccine instead of FluMist®, she pointed out. “When people catch the flu after getting flu vaccine, it probably isn’t because the vaccine failed to protect them but because either they caught a strain that wasn’t included in the annual vaccine or they were already exposed to the virus prior to receiving the vaccine,” Dale said.

It usually takes about two weeks for the vaccine to provide full protection against the flu virus. “However, flu shots are generally 70 percent to 80 percent effective in healthy people, so it is possible to be vaccinated but still catch
influenza,” she said. This year, Southwest Health District is administering both nasal spray and injectable seasonal flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months old and older unless their healthcare provider
indicates otherwise.
The August salmonella outbreak in eggs didn’t affect vaccine production, she added. “The eggs used for influenza vaccine production are different from eggs that are used for food,” she said. Southwest Health District’s 14 county health departments are expecting to begin administering seasonal flu vaccine later this month, Dale said.
The vaccine costs $25 per dose. County health departments will bill Medicare, Medicaid, PeachState, WellCare and AmeriGroup and state health benefit plans of United Healthcare and Cigna.

A Sylvester resident became a statistic of the Georgia State Patrol Labor Day holiday Highway crash reports last night around 11:20 P.M. Sylvester Police and EMS responded to a wreck reported on Main Street involving a jeep and two parked vehicles.

Irvin (Anthony) McDonald was traveling northbound into Sylvester City limits and had crossed the railroad tracks on Main Street when he apparently lost control of his vehicle. His Jeep slammed into a parked truck which collided with another car (pictured on scene below) on impact. No one occupied the vehicles parked outside of a soon-to-open coffee shop and McDonald was apparently the only passenger in the jeep. He reportedly suffered a face injury, possibly a broken nose. McDonald did not want to comment on scene. Georgia State Patrol was called in to investigate the incident which is likely alcohol related.

The pick-up truck and car damaged belong to the coffee shop owners who were already on scene last night when the incident occured. Pam and Steve Danford are in early development stages of a much anticipated coffee shop, P.M.S. Coffee. The Main Street coffee cafe is reportedly near McDonalds’ own business location. The Danford couple could not be reached for comment and we are currently awaiting SPD and GSP information on the incident.

The GSP Labor Day Holiday period began Friday evening at 6 P.M. and ends Monday at midnight. As of 6 P.M. Sunday, 117 injuries and 7 fatalities (all agencies statewide) were reported as a result of 190 crashes.

PHOTO: Worth Rams play in Asburn tonight and bring home a 49 – 12 victory.

UPDATE BELOW: In Worth County news today, Fire/Rescue responded to and extinguished at least three grass fires reported to E-911. A fire was reported burning in the median of Hwy 300 near the 5-mile marker; grass fires were reported on Jewel Crowe Road in three different areas, and a resident of Groveland Drive arrived home to discover a grass fire in her back yard near a wooded area.

A wreck that occurred during lunch hour today in Sylvester resulted in an ambulance transport of a pregnant female. The wreck occurred at the Livingston Street and Pope Street intersection. Sylvester Police, EMS, and Sylvester Fire responded to the scene.
At approximately 7 P.M., Poulan Police Sgt. Terra Thacker stopped a black Dodge Ram 1500 on Hwy 82 east in Poulan. She requested the K-9 Unit from Sylvester and a vehicle search resulted in a drug related arrest. Sgt Thacker could not give any further details on scene except one subject was taken into custody and the arrest is drug related.

The Ram pick-up is reportedly registered to a Lee County owner. Apparently, the stop was not due to a traffic violation, but based on activity of the suspect. PPD Chief Larry Whisenant reports details may be available as early as tomorrow (Saturday).

UPDATE: Jacob Childre, 26, of Albany was the subject arrested under charges related to drug possession. Drug-use paraphanalia was also found in Childre’s possession. Sgt Thacker reported today police recovered 14 Oxycodone pills in the search yesterday. Childre was transported to Turner County jail but warrants were issued today and he was transported back to Worth County jail. Reportedly he remains in jail tonight.

The Lady Rams added another win to their stat sheet after a shut-out at home field against Dougherty Lady Trojans Thursday. The game was Worth’s 8th consecutive win making their overall record 13 – 1.

Lady Rams Pitcher Kelly Weaver threw for a near no-hitter allowing only one hit in the game. A Trojan hit stopped at right field led to a single but was deemed ineffectual as Weaver pitched three clean strike-outs to close down the top of the inning. Weaver faced 14 batters and threw for 8-strike-outs in last night’s game.

As Rams took over in the 3rd, bases were loaded when Haley Ellis gets a hit over left centerfield for a homerun. Ellis connected for 2- hits out of 4-times at bat within the game, driving in a total of 5 RBI’s.

Lady Rams were at bat 23 times in the game called in 4th inning, winning 12 – 0 off 7-hits. They will play again at home against Tift County on Tuesday and Monroe on Thursday. Worth is currently 2 – 0 in region.

Stolen Property Recovered

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office managed to recover a stolen jeep taken on August 26 from Brown Milling & Peanut Co. in Bridgeboro. Sheriff Freddie Tompkins was at work after midnight Friday night when he received word from Lee County that a vehicle matching the description in a Be on the Lookout (BOLO) issued to law enforcement in surrounding counties last Thursday night and throughout the day Friday. Two subjects who were passengers in the stolen vehicle were taken into Lee County custody.

Worth County Sheriff Freddie Tompkins described how the two suspects were discovered Friday night. “They stopped at the EZ-GO store on (Hwy) 520 over next to Doublegate, west of Albany. They were putting some oil in it.” Tompkins said a male subject saw the vehicle and recognized it. He called the female owner of the Jeep and described it to her. “They had a Coffee County tag on it. They had switched the tags,” the Sheriff said.

Lee County law enforcement was notified. Lee County quickly notified Sheriff Tompkins in Worth County. “It was about midnight when they called me. I jumped up and got ready and took off over there.” Tompkins said Lee County currently has charges on the subjects including a DUI, possession of meth, and theft by receiving adding the vehicle the subjects were originally driving was discovered to be stolen out of Mississippi.

Tompkins said one of the subjects arrested had an Alabama driver’s license and the other a Mississippi driver’s license. “I think they have some relatives that live here on the lower end of Worth County.” The Sheriff believes the individuals may have been living out of their other automobile. “That old vehicle was full of clothes and coffee pots and stuff.”

The Jeep since has been recovered by the female owner. The two arrested who remain in Lee County custody, are Jeffrey Clay Lesley, 49, of Long Beach, MI and Stacy Childres, 42, of Doerun, GA and face charges in Worth County upon their release.

____________________________________________

Following the Berrien County game in mid-August, the Lady Rams’ only loss of the season, the Worth Rams came back in rebound mode and they haven’t let up since. Friday night Worth defeated 2B-A Turner County 5 – 2. Tonight (Wednesday) the Lady Rams played at home against Americus-Sumter for their first region match-up in the season.

The face-off with the 1 –AAA Lady Panthers came only four-days after the annual tournament held in Crisp County where the Lady Rams played undefeated. They earned their second tournament championship in the season. Worth defeated three teams with one resulting in shut-out victory.

Worth defeated Schley 6 – 4 on Saturday morning. Lauren Potts pitched delivering 7-strike-outs and allowing only 4-hits out of 26 batters. The Rams earned 6-runs out of 9-hits. The game following that afternoon would be against 1-AAAAA Tift County Lady Blue Devils. Pitcher Morgan Bell faced 27 batters allowing only 3-hits and Rams defense would allow no runs for their opponents. Rams won 5 – 0. For the Pool play championship, the Lady Rams faced 4-AAA Jackson Lady Red Devils. Worth senior Kelly Weaver took the pitcher’s mound to face 31 batters. She allowed only 7-hits and pitched 4 strike-outs. Worth connected for 11-hits to earn 5-runs. They pulled out a win over Jackson, 5 – 1 for the championship.

On Tuesday, the Lady Rams would again confront Tift County but this time on the Blue Devil’s home field. The Lady Devils led things off when they put 4-runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning. That would be the first runs on the scoreboard of the game, but the last for Tift. Lady Rams Pitcher Potts threw for 9-strike-outs, allowing only 6-hits out of 37 Blue Devil batters. Potts would also deliver on 5-RBI’s. Rams scored 13-runs out of 18-hits, connecting for nearly 50 percent of their times at bat, with not one hitter striking out.

Tonight’s region match-up at home with Americus-Sumter ended after only 4-innings. The game was originally scheduled for August 26th at home but was rescheduled due to rain.

The power hitting Lady Rams took control of the game from their first time at bat. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Worth earned 8-runs off 7-hits. Kimmy Lee, Katlyn Parton, and Brittany Cornell each stole a base in the inning with each effort leading up to a run. Worth scored three more runs in the 2nd and would not relent going into the 3rd. They scored two more runs when Haley Ellis homered followed by a single from sophomore Marissa Moreland. Moreland would steal 2nd and 3rd base which led up to the final run of the inning. Holding their opponents scoreless, the game ended with Lady Rams winning 13 – 0. Rams Pitcher Bell allowed only one hit in the game that occurred in the 3rd inning. She faced 16-batters ending her night only one shy of a no-hitter.

The next game will also be played at home and against region opponents. The Dougherty Lady Trojans will be the visiting team in Worth County Thursday night. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 P.M.

A rained out game Thursday didn’t stop these dedicated little players!

Preparedness Month’s goal: Knowing Southwest Georgia’s hazards and
how to prepare for them

ALBANY, GA — Chemical spills and accidental releases of other hazardous materials are high on the list of Southwest Georgia’s top public health hazards, but tornadoes, flooding, drought and pandemic flu are not far behind, warns Southwest Georgia Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Julie Miller.
Regardless of whether the hazard is manmade or natural, the important thing is to be as prepared as possible for it.
“Throughout September we are observing National Emergency Preparedness Month,” Miller said. “Our focus is to encourage Southwest Georgia residents to take concrete actions to truly help themselves, their neighbors and their communities so they will be ready in case disaster strikes.”
She said taking the following four simple steps now can make you and your family safer when emergencies occur:
● Get or make a disaster kit
● Make a family emergency plan
● Be informed
● Get involved
“Unfortunately, it isn’t a question of if, but when, we as a community will cope with disaster,” Miller said. The 14 counties comprising Southwest Health District are part of Georgia’s “Tornado Alley. In recent years, deadly tornado strikes have claimed lives in Baker, Mitchell, Colquitt, Grady, and Thomas counties. Further, widespread flooding has caused serious property damage, injuries and drownings throughout the district. And last year, Public Health officials were on high alert as 2009 H1N1, a novel strain of influenza, swept through Southwest Georgia on its way
around the globe, said Miller.
Acts of nature are not the only potential disasters that could strike Southwest Georgia. “We encourage residents to check with their county Emergency Management Agency directors to find out more about hazards facing their communities,” she said. “One thing to be aware of is that chemicals and other hazardous materials are being moved on our highways and railroads and used on our farms and by our manufacturing facilities. When materials such as these are released into the environment – whether by accident or deliberately – it can be devastating,” said Miller.
Emergencies occur without warning; and while local responders will be on the scene after a disaster they may not be able to reach everyone right away. “Our recommendation is that emergency kits should have enough basic supplies for you and your family to survive for two weeks,” Miller said. Kits should include food, water, flashlights, batteries, medications, a NOAA weather radio, personal hygiene items, baby supplies such as formula and diapers, garbage bags with ties, pet food, matches, a first aid kit and sleeping bags. A complete list is available at www.ready.gov.
When it comes to making a family emergency plan, be sure to plug in aging parents, children who are off at college and other family members who may not share the household or who may need additional assistance, Miller said. “Think about that relative who lives in another community and also about your elderly neighbor and walk through with them what they would do if they needed to evacuate,” she suggested. As for being informed, Miller said that means more than staying alert to what is being broadcast by news media. “There are many ways to stay informed during an emergency situation, including using social media such as FaceBook and Twitter, by texting and by emailing,” Miller explained.
The importance of being involved by volunteering – or simply by taking care of friends and neighbors who need help during emergencies – can’t be emphasized enough, she added. Public Health is seeking volunteers to join the Southwest Georgia Regional Medical Reserve Corp, a unit affiliated with the Citizens Corps of Lee and Dougherty Counties that partners with two Community Emergency Response Teams in Lee and Dougherty and a Fire Corps in Lee County, Miller said.
Other volunteer opportunities are available through the Red Cross, churches and social and civic organizations. “Public Health partners with many volunteer agencies during emergency response activities,” Miller said.

The Worth County Class of 1970 held their 40-year reunion tonight at Southern Woods Plantation. The event also included live entertainment from the local high school band tha year, The Lovin’ Feeling. Mike Carter and Len Dorminey were two original band members of the four that entertained while former classmates took to the dance floor. Carter laughingly said before picking up his guitar and singing that his band finally got a 30-minute practice in yesterday. But they played as if they just picked up where they left off in high school, belting out rock tunes of that era as former classmates were taken back to 1970 in Worth County. See OnScene photos below:
